Learning for Life

A young woman in a graduation gown poses with a group of children in front of a playground structure.

At Nagoya International School, we believe students need opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, habits, and character that help them thrive in school, in relationships, and throughout their lives.

Our Pastoral Curriculum brings together dedicated well-being learning, homeroom programmes, student retreats, and everyday experiences that help students grow as confident, compassionate, and responsible individuals. Through these experiences, students build resilience, strengthen relationships, develop self-awareness, and learn to make thoughtful decisions that support both themselves and others.

A Structured Curriculum

We believe this learning is critical to student growth and success, which is why we have a dedicated well-being (pastoral care) curriculum. Delivered through a structured, age-appropriate program that grows with students from Grades 6 to 12. While responsive to each cohort's needs, the program follows a carefully planned progression that helps students revisit important concepts with increasing depth and maturity as they grow.

Each year, students explore four interconnected areas of personal development:

Academic Well-Being

Students develop the habits that support successful learning, including organization, study skills, resilience, reflection, digital citizenship, time management, and goal setting.

Practical Life Skills

Students build confidence in the everyday skills needed for healthy, independent living. Topics include nutrition, financial literacy, media literacy, healthy routines, decision-making, and preparing for adulthood.

Relationships & Personal Safety

Students learn about identity, healthy relationships, consent, boundaries, respectful communication, online safety, and personal responsibility through age-appropriate Relationship and Sexuality Education.

Social & Emotional Learning

Students strengthen self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, resilience, stress management, and mental wellbeing through reflection, discussion, and restorative practices.

Growing with Every Year

As students mature, so does the Pastoral Care curriculum.

In the Middle Years Programme, students lay the foundations for personal wellbeing by learning to manage emotions, develop healthy relationships, become responsible digital citizens, strengthen study habits, and build resilience through the challenges of adolescence.

In Grades 11 and 12, the program shifts toward preparing students for life beyond school. Students explore financial literacy, independent living, healthy lifestyles, university preparation, consent, relationships, and the practical skills needed to navigate adulthood with confidence.

By revisiting key ideas throughout secondary school, students continually deepen their understanding while developing the confidence and judgement needed for each new stage of life.

Learning Through Relationships & Experiences

Many of life's most important lessons are learned through meaningful relationships.

Homeroom teachers, counsellors, advisors, and other trusted adults work alongside students throughout their school journey, creating opportunities for reflection, conversation, goal setting, and personal growth. Together, they help students develop the confidence, empathy, and sense of responsibility needed to contribute positively to their communities.

Student Retreats

Each year, Secondary students begin the school year with multi-day retreats that strengthen relationships, build community, and establish a positive foundation for the year ahead. Through outdoor challenges, environmental stewardship, collaborative problem-solving, and shared experiences, students develop resilience, leadership, teamwork, and confidence while building lasting connections with their peers and teachers.

These retreats embody our belief that meaningful learning happens when students step beyond their comfort zones, connect with others, and reflect on their experiences.

Growing Into Confident Young Adults

The skills students develop through Learning for Life extend far beyond graduation. By intentionally nurturing personal growth alongside academic learning, NIS helps students grow into capable, caring, and principled young adults who approach new opportunities and challenges with confidence, integrity, and purpose.
