Learning Beyond the Classroom

Some of the most meaningful learning happens when students step beyond the walls of a classroom and engage directly with the world around them.

We believe that learning is strengthened through authentic experiences that spark curiosity, encourage inquiry, and help students apply their understanding in meaningful ways. Whether students are investigating local ecosystems, exploring museums and historical sites, collaborating with community organizations, or challenging themselves on multi-day learning expeditions, these experiences deepen understanding while building confidence, resilience, and lasting relationships.

Learning beyond the classroom is not an occasional enrichment activity. It is an intentional part of how we educate students, helping them connect knowledge with experience, develop new perspectives, and discover that learning happens everywhere.

Why Learning Beyond the Classroom Matters

Some concepts can be introduced in a classroom, but deeper understanding often develops through experience. When students investigate, create, collaborate, and solve problems in authentic settings, learning becomes more meaningful, memorable, and connected to the world around them.

Whether exploring a forest, visiting a museum, engaging with a local community, or working alongside classmates during an extended learning trip, these experiences help students build knowledge while developing the confidence, relationships, and perspectives that support lifelong learning.

Connect with Culture & Environments

When learning takes place outside the classroom, students have the opportunity to experience Japan's history, culture, geography, industries, and communities in deeper ways.

Student Retreats

Secondary students begin each school year by stepping away from their normal routines and into experiences designed to strengthen community, build resilience, and establish a positive foundation for the year ahead.

Through outdoor challenges, collaborative activities, environmental stewardship, and shared reflection, students develop leadership, teamwork, empathy, and confidence while building meaningful relationships with their peers and teachers.

Retreats provide opportunities for students to disconnect from daily distractions, connect with nature, and discover new strengths in themselves and others. Whether preparing meals together, navigating unfamiliar environments, participating in outdoor adventures, or contributing to community service projects, students learn that some of life's most valuable lessons emerge through shared experiences.

These retreats help create a sense of belonging and trust that supports learning throughout the school year.

Extended Learning Trips

Each year, students in the Middle and High School participate in multi-day Extended Learning Trips (ELTs) designed to connect classroom learning with authentic experiences throughout Japan.

These journeys are carefully planned around curriculum goals, inquiry, and reflection. Students investigate real-world questions, engage with local communities, collect evidence, collaborate with peers, and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. Through these experiences, concepts become tangible, learning becomes memorable, and students gain a deeper understanding of both themselves and the world around them.

Learning Across Grade Levels

Each Extended Learning Trip reflects the learning priorities of that year level. In 2026:

Grade 6 reflected on wellbeing, perseverance, and belonging through the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
Grade 7 investigated sustainability while contributing to conservation efforts in Norikura's Zero-Carbon Park.
Grade 8 explored Japan's global history and cultural identity through experiences in Nagasaki.
Grade 9 discovered how mathematics and science shape modern cities through investigations in Osaka.
Grade 10 explored creativity, design, theatre, music, and Japanese arts through Osaka's vibrant cultural landscape.
Grade 11 collaborated across scientific disciplines to investigate real-world challenges through the IB Collaborative Sciences Project.

Each experience is different, but all share the same purpose: connecting learning with authentic experiences that inspire curiosity, reflection, and growth.

Learning Throughout Our Community

Many learning experiences happen much closer to home. Throughout the year, students regularly extend their learning beyond the classroom through field trips and local learning experiences that enrich classroom inquiry.

Students might:

Visit museums, galleries, and cultural sites to deepen historical and artistic understanding.
Explore farms, forests, rivers, and parks while investigating environmental and scientific concepts.
Attend theatrical performances, concerts, and exhibitions that bring the arts to life.
Learn from local businesses, universities, and community organizations.
Participate in service-learning experiences that strengthen connections with the communities around them.

These experiences help students understand that learning is not confined to textbooks or classrooms. It exists throughout the world around them.

Our Campus as a Classroom

Learning beyond the classroom also begins just outside our doors.

NIS's campus provides a rich environment where students observe, investigate, create, and collaborate in outdoor spaces throughout the school day. Teachers regularly use gardens, playgrounds, green spaces, and outdoor learning areas to support inquiry across subjects.

Students may conduct scientific investigations, create artwork inspired by nature, practise observation skills, develop environmental stewardship, participate in physical education, or simply take learning outdoors when the environment enhances understanding.

These experiences encourage curiosity, creativity, and a deeper connection to the natural world while reminding students that meaningful learning can happen anywhere.

Learning That Lasts

Some lessons are measured in hours. Others stay with students for years.

Whether hiking a pilgrimage trail, investigating a museum exhibit, restoring a natural habitat, collaborating around a campfire, or discovering something unexpected in our own school grounds, these experiences shape how students think, grow, and see the world.

At NIS, learning beyond the classroom is an essential part of education. By connecting knowledge with authentic experiences, students develop the confidence, curiosity, resilience, and perspective that prepare them not only for academic success, but for a lifetime of learning.
