Dolphin Athletics

Competition. Community. School Pride.

Athletics are an important part of student life at NIS, providing opportunities for students to challenge themselves, build meaningful relationships, and represent their school with pride.

Whether competing on the court, field, track, or diamond, student-athletes develop resilience, teamwork, leadership, and perseverance through experiences that extend far beyond the final score. Participation in athletics encourages students to set goals, overcome challenges, support one another, and contribute to something larger than themselves.

As Dolphin athletes, students learn what it means to compete with integrity, celebrate success with humility, and grow through both victories and setbacks.

NIS Athletic Teams

Students can participate in a range of competitive sports at both the Middle School and High School levels. Teams compete throughout the year against other international schools in Japan and the wider region, providing meaningful opportunities for growth, teamwork, and competition.

Competing at Home and Abroad

Athletics at NIS extend well beyond our campus. Throughout the year, Dolphin athletes compete against other international schools across Japan and the wider region through leagues, tournaments, and championship events. These experiences challenge students to perform at their best while representing NIS with pride, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Travel and competition provide opportunities for students to build friendships with peers from other schools, experience new communities and cultures, and develop confidence in unfamiliar environments. Along the way, students learn valuable lessons about teamwork, leadership, resilience, and what it means to contribute to something larger than themselves.

For many students, these experiences become some of the most memorable moments of their time at NIS.

Part of a Strong International School Community

NIS proudly participates in two of the region's international school athletics and activities organizations, providing students with opportunities for meaningful competition, leadership, cultural exchange, and connection with peers beyond our campus.

East Asia International School Athletics Association (EAISAC)
Nagoya International School is a voting member of the East Asia International Schools Activities Conference (EAISAC), an organization that brings international schools together through athletics and other activities that promote cultural understanding, friendship, and personal growth.

In addition to NIS, the four other EAISAC schools are: International School of Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), International School of Busan (Korea), Chatsworth International School (Singapore) and Fukuoka International School.

All Japan Athletics Association (AJAA)
As a member of the Western Japan Athletics Association (WJAA), NIS students compete regularly against international schools throughout Japan in a wide range of team and individual sports.

NIS Athletic Council

Student Leadership in Action

Athletics at NIS are shaped not only by coaches and staff, but also by students. The NIS Athletic Council gives students opportunities to take an active role in building school spirit, supporting teams, organizing events, and celebrating the accomplishments of fellow athletes. Through this leadership experience, students develop confidence, collaboration, and organizational skills while helping strengthen the culture of Dolphin Athletics.

One Community, Many Ways to Participate

Competitive athletics is one important part of student life at NIS, but it is not the only way students engage in sport and physical activity.

Through our Co-Curricular Activities program, students can explore a variety of sports, wellness, and recreational activities that complement the Dolphins Athletics program. These opportunities allow students to try new interests, develop skills, stay active, and connect with peers outside of competitive team environments.

Whether representing NIS in competition or participating in a sports-focused club, students benefit from the confidence, friendships, and sense of belonging that come from being part of an active community.

A Program Connected to Learning

Athletics and education share many of the same goals. In Physical and Health Education (PHE) classes, students develop an understanding of movement, health, wellbeing, teamwork, and personal growth. Athletics provides another authentic environment in which students can apply and extend this learning.

Students experience first-hand what it means to set goals, respond to feedback, persevere through challenges, manage emotions, work collaboratively, and reflect on performance. These experiences reinforce many of the same approaches to learning that support success in the classroom. Just as students learn through inquiry and reflection in academic subjects, athletes learn through practice, analysis, adaptation, and continuous improvement in sports environments.

Aligned With Our Values

Students at NIS will play alongside teammates from multiple cultures and nationalities. They learn to communicate across cultures, navigate different perspectives, and work toward common goals. Athletics becomes a powerful vehicle for international-mindedness. Participation in Sports resonates deeply with our school values:

  • Safety: Learning to take physical and mental care of oneself and others
  • Responsibility: Commitment to learning alongside teammates and through training
  • Growth: Continuous physical improvement and mental resilience
  • Belonging: Being part of something larger than oneself

Why Athletics Matter in a Child's Education

More than a scoreboard.

While competition is an important part of athletics, some of the most valuable lessons happen away from the scoreboard. Participation in sport provides opportunities for students to discover strengths, develop confidence, and build meaningful connections with others. Athletics and sports teach students how to:

  • Work effectively as part of a team
  • Lead and support others
  • Respond constructively to setbacks
  • Demonstrate perseverance
  • Manage success with humility and challenge with focus
  • Balance individual goals with collective responsibility

These experiences help students develop habits and mindsets that support success throughout their lives. They learn how to respond to adversity, support teammates, lead by example, and contribute to a shared goal. They build friendships that often last long after the season ends and develop habits that support future success in university, careers, and life.
