The arts play an essential part in a holistic, balanced education. Human beings are naturally different and diverse, and through creating, performing, responding, and reflecting, students learn to express ideas, explore perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
At NIS, students experience the arts as creators, performers, collaborators, and thinkers. Through visual arts, music, and drama, they develop technical skills, creative confidence, and the ability to express ideas in meaningful and impactful ways.
From the earliest years through graduation, the arts help students do more than create beautiful work. They encourage curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience. These are skills that are increasingly important in a rapidly changing world.

Students engage with the arts through three interconnected disciplines, each offering opportunities for creativity, self-expression, collaboration, and growth.
Visual Arts
Students explore a variety of artistic techniques and media while developing creativity, technical skills, and the ability to communicate ideas through visual expression.
Music
Students grow as performers, creators, and collaborators through music-making, composition, and performance while exploring diverse musical traditions and styles.
Drama & Theater
Students build confidence, creativity, and communication skills through acting, storytelling, performance, and collaborative theatre experiences.
A Creative Journey from Early Years to Graduation
The arts program at NIS is designed as a continuous journey that grows alongside our students.
In the Elementary School, students explore visual art, music, movement, storytelling, and performance while developing confidence, curiosity, and foundational artistic skills. As students move into Middle School, they deepen their understanding of artistic techniques, creative processes, and cultural influences while working across the visual arts, music, and drama.
In High School, students have opportunities to pursue more specialized study, develop their own artistic voice, and engage in increasingly sophisticated creative work. Whether creating a portfolio, composing music, designing a performance, or presenting an exhibition, students are encouraged to think independently and express themselves with purpose.
Finding and Sharing Their Voice
The arts provide students with powerful ways to explore ideas, express themselves, and connect with others. Throughout their time at NIS, students develop both the confidence and the skills to communicate their unique perspectives through creative work.
Connected to Learning Across the Curriculum
The arts enrich learning across every area of the curriculum by helping students explore ideas, communicate understanding, and see the world through different perspectives. Whether interpreting historical events through performance, communicating scientific concepts visually, exploring cultural identity through music, or applying design thinking to solve complex problems, students discover that creativity is a powerful way to deepen understanding.
Within the International Baccalaureate framework, the arts are both a discipline and a way of learning. Students investigate concepts, make connections across subjects, and reflect on how artistic expression both shapes and is shaped by cultures and societies. Through these experiences, they develop the curiosity, creativity, and confidence to approach learning with imagination and purpose.
