The IB at NIS: The Diploma Programme


 The IB Diploma Program at Nagoya International School


The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) curriculum aims to develop in students the ability to reason for themselves, rather than merely accumulate facts. It aims to enhance awareness of our common humanity, to encourage a sense of social responsibility, and to prepare students for life-long learning. The IBDP is both a structured program that offers a strong general foundation and also a flexible program that acknowledges the particular interests of individual students, allowing the freedom to pursue their own interests within an internationally recognized curricular framework.

Students take written examinations at the end of their two-year course of study, which are marked by external IB examiners, and also complete in-school assessments that are either initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners.

The IBDP is suitable for most NIS students, and over the last six years, over 85% of students at NIS have elected to follow the full IBDP, and nearly every one of those has earned their IB Diploma.

Students not pursuing the full diploma study the same material as their IBDP classmates but are not required to take the IBDP exams or complete the same CAS requirements. Students who do not wish to take the full IBDP may attempt any IBDP course, and successful completion of the course and final exam will result in IB certificates in those courses.  Alternatively, students who attempt the full IBDP, but do not successfully pass all their courses, may still earn certificates in courses they do complete successfully.

When deciding on the best diploma option for students, we encourage students to challenge themselves but be realistic and positive.  Careful consideration to course selection is best determined in grade 10 after consulting teachers.
