Personalized Learning

Staff working within the Personalized Learning strand are actively engaged in helping to remove barriers that a student may face to access the curriculum. These may include addressing student need in any of the following areas:

  • Cognition and Learning
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Sensory and/or Physical
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Personalized Learning staff engage in an ongoing cycle of analysis in order to deliver the most effective provision, following an 'identify, plan, do and review' framework.

Assessment

The Student Services department has a range of assessments used to identify a student’s needs. A wide range of processes are used, including discussions with teachers, students and parents, lesson observations, as well as the diagnostic tools outlined below.

At times, it may be necessary to refer students (and families) to outside professional assistance for a variety of reasons. In particular, any student requiring psychological and/or educational assessment would be referred to a fully licensed and certified clinical psychologist. This testing is generally arranged through the Student Services Department Leader and the costs are borne by the parents. All assessment is strictly confidential and conducted with the highest professional standards.

Please note that NIS cannot diagnose any Special Educational Needs such as dyslexia or ADD; these can only be diagnosed by psychologists or medical professionals.
