How to Apply to NIS
Joining a new school community is an important decision for both educators and schools. Our application process is designed to help candidates learn more about NIS while allowing us to understand your experiences, strengths, and alignment with our community and educational philosophy. Explore the steps below to learn more about the process.

Step 2
Register with Search Associates
Teaching and leadership candidates are required to maintain an active Search Associates profile as part of our recruitment process.
Step 3
Submit Your Application
Teaching & Leadership position applications must be submitted via Search Associates.
Other positions may use our online application form. Specific information can be found in each job posting.Step 4
Understand the Timeline
International school recruitment generally begins in late fall, with interviews taking place throughout the winter and hiring decisions often finalized by the spring.
Not a Search Associates Candidate?
While most international teaching positions at NIS are filled through Search Associates, we understand that this may not be the right pathway for every applicant. If you are already living in Japan or have special circumstances that prevent you from applying through Search Associates, we welcome you to explain your situation when submitting your application. Please include a brief explanation with your application so we can determine whether we are able to consider you through our direct application process.
Important Information
Education Requirements
Teaching positions require a minimum of a bachelor's degree, a valid teaching certification and two years’ experience (as a qualified full-time teacher) in a school system/curriculum similar to NIS. We regret that we cannot consider teacher applications that fall short of this minimum expectation.
Internship positions require at least a BA. A teaching certification is preferred but not required.
Local Candidate Pool
NIS is always looking for candidates to join the associate/local position pool. Apply to join the pool by completing the appropriate application below.
Be sure to indicate that you would like to register for the local candidate pool. We will contact you when a position that suits your profile becomes available.
Substitute Teacher & School Nurse
NIS is always looking for people to serve as substitute teachers to cover for absent teachers. Additionally, we are looking for people who can work as substitute nurses.
Applicants must already be living near NIS and, in the case of substitute teaching, be ready to support the school on an irregular basis.
