Where are you living now?
Currently I live in Tokyo Japan, but now that the pandemic is allowing more travel, I plan to be moving around again a bit more for work. 
 
What kind of work are you doing?
I am a film director. Making a variety of things including Commercials, Branded Content, Short films, music videos, and original series. [Editors note: you can see his work at http://www.mackshepp.com]
 
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the freedom and fulfillment of immersing myself in a fresh idea and story with every new opportunity. I also get to work with a wide variety of people and no project is the same. 
 
What kind of challenges does it hold for you?
I'm usually working between several different cultures and perspectives, and you have to make sure any story you are telling will be universally understandable while also being told in a way that is also you, and not trying to please everyone. 
 
Did NIS help you prepare for your current position in any way?
Yes! I remember having my talents recognized and encouraged at an early age and the wide variety of teachers that taught there had a good radar for this in students--and I always felt like they made me believe that it was possible to achieve what I wanted to do. 
 
What’s the one thing that you really enjoyed about NIS?
I enjoyed the community and friendships the most. Day after day, getting to know my friends more deeply, as well as the unique perspectives that were offered by new teachers/friends each year. 
 
What’s the one thing you miss most about Japan/Nagoya? 
My parents still are in Nagoya, so I get a good reminder of all things NGO whenever I go back to visit.

What words of wisdom do you have for today’s Dolphins?
Well...I've never been asked once for my college diploma or resume. So if you're thinking of working as a creative professional, then I would think twice about whether college/university is really worth it! Travel and see the world as much as you can. NIS was a great launching pad for me for that sort of thing!

現在は東京在住ですが、コロナ禍でも旅行が出来るようにはなってきたので、今後は仕事で移動することも増えると思います。

お仕事の内容を教えてください。
映像作家です。CM、ブランドコンテンツ、短編映画、音楽ビデオ、オリジナル作品などの様々な映像作品を創作しています。[編集者注：彼の作品は  http://www.mackshepp.com にてご覧いただけます] 

お仕事のどんなところが楽しいですか？
作品ごとに新たなアイデアやストーリーに没頭できる仕事です。自由で充実感があります。また、毎回様々な人と一緒に仕事する機会に恵まれて、ひとつとして同じプロジェクトがないのも楽しいですね。

大変だと思うことは何ですか？
私の作品にはいつもいくつもの異なる文化や視点が関わってくることが多いので、誰にも分かりやすく、かつ、万人にウケなくてもいいから、わかる人にはわかるといった深いストーリーを語ることを心がげています。

NISでの経験は少しでも役立っていますか？
もちろん！ずっと前から私の才能を見出し励ましてもらったことは忘れません。NISには、そういう意味で生徒を見る目に長けた先生方がたくさんいらっしゃいました。何事も為せば成ることを教えてくださったのも先生方です。

NISのどんなところがいちばん良かったですか？
コミュニティや友情ですね。毎日、友達のことを知れば知るほど。そして毎年、新たな先生や友人から独自の視点を学ぶことができました。

名古屋で懐かしく思うのはどんなことですか？
両親はまだ名古屋にいるので、帰省するたびに名古屋を満喫しています。 

最後に後輩へのアドバイスをお願いします。
実は私はこれまで学位も履歴書も求められる立場に立ったことがありません。だから、クリエイティブな職業に就きたいのであれば、大学が全てではないかも知れないということを考えてみてもいいかも知れません。旅に出て出来るだけ世界を見て欲しいです。NISはそのために十分な備えをもたらしてくれました。
