Where are you living now?
Tokyo

What kind of work are you doing?
Retired now, but I was working in the securities industry as a bond trader and in banking.

What did you enjoy most about your job?
Every day was different since you don’t know what the markets will do. The fear of losing money or losing your job is always “enjoyable”.

What kind of challenges did it hold for you?
Just knowing there is always someone faster and smarter than yourself.

Did NIS help you prepare for that work position in any way?
Having the experience of being surrounded by students from countries around the world was a huge plus throughout my career. Having worked in New York, London, and Tokyo and visiting various large cities for business, the understanding that there are many cultures was big. I once said in a diversity training session, "Why are we doing this in 2023? I went to an international school from 1972-1980… this is all old business!"

What’s the one thing that you are really enjoying or most excited about these days?
Spending time with my dog.

What’s the one thing you miss most about NIS?
There isn’t just one thing. I miss my classmates… we were a small class… 2nd to 8th grade… great times. Little to worry about. Only 8-12 kids per grade meant I could always be in the Top Ten in my class. I miss lunch in the cafeteria/Multi-Purpose Room. I miss the Dad’s Root Beer machine. I miss the bus rides where the bigger kids would play their 8-track tapes! The “Kibo” Yearbook. Great times at NIS!

Lastly, what words of wisdom do you have for today’s Dolphins?
You may not know it, but you could be enjoying some of the best moments of your life right now at NIS.

東京に住んでいます。

どんなお仕事をされていましたか？
今はリタイアしていますが、以前は証券業界で債券トレーダーとして働いていました。銀行業務にも関わっており、金融の世界で長くキャリアを積みました。

お仕事で一番楽しかったことは？
毎日が違うことですね。マーケットがどう動くかは誰にもわからないので、常に新鮮でした。お金を失うかもしれない、仕事を失うかもしれない。そんな緊張感の中で働くことも含めて、すべてが「楽しかった」と言えます。

どんなチャレンジがありましたか？
自分よりも速く、頭の良い人が常に周りにいるという現実を受け入れることですね。それを理解した上でどう動くかが大切でした。

NISでの経験は、キャリアにどのように役立ちましたか？
世界中から集まった生徒たちと共に学んだ経験は、私のキャリアを通して大きな強みになりました。ニューヨーク、ロンドン、東京で働き、さまざまな文化に触れる中で、他者の背景を理解することがいかに重要かを実感しました。ある時、ダイバーシティ研修で「なぜ2023年になってこんな研修を？私は1970年代にすでにインターナショナルスクールで学んでいましたよ」と話したこともあります。多様性を自然に受け入れる姿勢は、まさにNISで育まれたものです。

最近の楽しみは？
愛犬と過ごす時間です。穏やかで幸せなひとときですね。

NISで一番恋しいものは何ですか？
ひとつには絞れません。クラスメートのみんなが恋しいです。私たちは少人数のクラスで、2年生から8年生まで一緒に過ごしました。心配事も少なく、1学年8〜12人ほどだったので、いつも「トップ10」に入れました（笑）。カフェテリア（多目的ホール）でのランチ、Dad’s Root Beerの自販機、バスの中で流れる8トラックテープ、そして「希望（Kibo）」イヤーブック、どれも懐かしく、大切な思い出です。

最後に、後輩たちへのアドバイスをお願いします。
今、あなたがNISで過ごしている時間は、きっと人生で最も貴重な瞬間のひとつです。どうかその時間を大切に、存分に楽しんでください。
