Where are you living now?
Kanagawa, Japan

What kind of work are you doing?
I own and run a lab-grown diamond jewelry brand called KYRAH (pronounced ki-rah.) I design and sell bridal jewelry as well as everyday pieces online, to customers across Japan. kyrah.co

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love that my brand is really a portrayal of the values that I hold. KYRAH celebrates diversity and individuality, and recognizes the small achievements and milestones that lead to bigger goals. When I hear my clients tell me that my jewelry empowers them, I feel so honored that I’m able to share these values with them through my jewelry.

What kind of challenges does it hold for you?
Making decisions on my own. There are times when I have to take big risks or handle issues that may arise during the jewelry production process, but because I currently run my business alone, I don’t have a colleague that I can just ping to get help from. Fortunately though, I have a husband who is also a business owner that helps me navigate through entrepreneurship. I also read many books to help me make better business decisions.

Did NIS help you prepare for your current position in any way?
Yes! NIS has taught me not to be afraid of making mistakes – or simply asking when you don’t know. When I left my job at Google to start my own business, I was nervous, but I took on the challenge anyway. I met with people that knew better than me and quickly learned that people are always willing to help.

What’s the one thing that you are really enjoying or most excited about these days?
I actually wake up every morning excited about work! I feel so grateful to be able to have a job that doesn’t feel like “work.”

What’s the one thing you miss most about NIS?
I have so many fond memories at NIS, but I’d say I miss playing sports with my friends the most! Especially going to tournaments, aka slumber parties.

Lastly, what words of wisdom do you have for today’s Dolphins?
It’s okay to not know what you want to do yet. When you get out of school, there is so much out there that doesn't fit into “subjects.” You’ll learn what you do and don’t enjoy as you walk through life, and you can always switch paths along the way. I came across my passion when I was 31, and I’ve enjoyed every part of the journey leading up to it as well.

 「KYRAH（キラ）」というラボグロウンダイヤモンドのジュエリーブランドを運営しています。ブライダルジュエリーから日常使いのアイテムまで、自分でデザインして、オンラインで日本全国のお客様に販売しています。kyrah.co

お仕事の中で最もやりがいを感じるのはどんなときですか？
私のブランド「KYRAH」には、私自身の価値観がそのまま表れています。KYRAHは、多様性と個性を大切にし、小さな達成や節目をたたえながら、大きな目標へとつながる歩みを応援しています。お客様から「ジュエリーに励まされた」と言っていただけると、本当に光栄に思います。

どんなチャレンジがありますか？
ひとりで意思決定をしなければならないことです。リスクを取る判断や、製作過程でのトラブル対応など、相談できる同僚がいないぶん、大変に感じることもあります。ただ、同じく事業をしている夫が起業について相談に乗ってくれるため、とても心強い存在です。また、ビジネス書を読むなどして日々学びを重ねています。

NISでの経験が、今の仕事に役立っていると感じますか？
NISでは、間違いを恐れずに挑戦することや、わからないことは素直に「教えて」と伝えることの大切さを学びました。Googleでの仕事を辞めて独立する際には不安もありましたが、勇気を出して一歩を踏み出しました。自分よりも経験豊富な方々のお話を伺う中で、「助けてくれる人は必ずいる」と気づくことができました。

最近、楽しみにしていることやワクワクしていることはありますか？
毎朝、仕事をするのが楽しみです。「仕事」という感覚がないほど、好きなことを仕事にできていることに、日々感謝しています。

NISで一番恋しいものは何ですか？
NISには楽しい思い出がたくさんありますが、やっぱり一番は友だちと一緒に過ごしたスポーツの時間です。特に大会に参加したときの、ちょっとした“スリープオーバー”のような雰囲気がとても懐かしいですね。

最後に、後輩たちへのメッセージをお願いします。
学校を卒業すると、教科という枠を超えて、たくさんの選択肢が広がっています。人生を歩む中で、「自分はこれが好き」「これはちょっと違うかも」と、少しずつ自分のことがわかってきますし、途中で進む道を変えてもまったく問題ありません。私自身、本当に情熱を注げるものに出会えたのは31歳のとき。でも、それまでに経験してきたすべてのことが、今の自分につながっています。
