Polly, class of 1988, attended NIS in the mid-80s while her parents were part of the teaching staff. She reflects here on the lessons learned during her time in Japan and how they continue to shape her approach to caregiving and connection.

Where are you living now?
After leaving NIS after my parents' (Mr. and Mrs. Hauenstein, 1985-1987) teaching contracts were over, I've been living in Ohio.

What kind of work are you doing?
I'm a family caregiver to my husband, mom, and brother. My mom is 93 and she taught 2nd grade at NIS, and my dad taught 4th.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
No stressed schedule and spending my time making sure my family is taken care of.

What kind of challenges does it hold for you?
It's family, so sometimes there's frustration.

Did NIS help you prepare for your current position in any way?
NIS helped prepare me for life. Such a world opened up to me, being privileged as a teenager to travel it. My biggest lesson was learning to embrace every person as they come to you. You'll always learn something, big or small.

What’s the one thing that you are really enjoying or most excited about these days?
Honestly, I'm excited to be training a new service dog for my husband.

What’s the one thing you miss most about NIS?
It was so long ago, but the friendships made and the experiences that I never would have anywhere else.

Lastly, what words of wisdom do you have for today’s Dolphins?
If the school is anything like it was in the 80s, soak up as much as you can! My teachers were incredible, and I hope you're still learning from extraordinary educators.

どんなチャレンジがありますか？
家族だからこそ、時にはフラストレーションを感じることもあります。

NISでの経験が、今の仕事に役立っていると感じますか？
NISは私に人生そのものの準備をさせてくれました。10代で世界を旅することができたのは本当に貴重な経験でした。一番大きな学びは、どんな人でもそのまま受け入れること。そして、そこから必ず何かを学べるということです。それが小さなことでも大きなことでも。

最近楽しんでいることやワクワクしていることは何ですか？
夫のために新しいサービスドッグの訓練をしている時がとても楽しいです。

NISで最も懐かしいことは何ですか？
もうずいぶん前のことですが、そこで築いた友情や、他では得られなかった貴重な経験が今でも心に残っています。

最後に、後輩たちへのアドバイスをお願いします。
もしNISが80年代と同じような学校であれば、今の時間をめいっぱい楽しんでください！私の先生たちは本当に素晴らしかったので、皆さんもきっと今、素晴らしい先生方から多くのことを学んでいるはずです。
