Wakana, Class of 2021, was one of the first to answer our call for Dolphin Tales [here] soon after she left NIS. Now 4 years later much has changed in her life. From the Netherlands to China, read on to see how she is doing.

Where are you living now?
I am living in Beijing, China.

What kind of work are you doing?
First, a little bit about my company: JD.com, also known as Jingdong, is China’s largest retailer by revenue and a Fortune Global 500 company, currently ranked as the 44th largest company in the world. Founded in 1998, it has grown into a global leader in e-commerce, logistics, industrial services, healthcare, and cutting-edge technology, distinguished by its vertically integrated model that controls its own nationwide logistics and supply chain networks. With revenues exceeding USD 150 billion in 2024, JD.com is not only one of the world’s biggest companies but also one of the most innovative. I am proud to share that I have joined JD.com and am being trained as part of a leadership program to become a future backbone of the company. My training spans retail, logistics, R&D, industrial sectors, and technology, allowing me to contribute to one of the world’s most influential enterprises.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I’ll be spending my first year in Beijing before moving to Europe to support JD.com’s expansion across the EU. The company already has logistics and warehouses in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, and Poland, giving us a strong foundation for growth. As part of the management training program, I’m rotating across departments for six months — starting with retail divisions like food & beverage and luxury brands, and then moving into cross-border business and logistics. This rotation allows me to explore different sectors, understand the full scope of opportunities, and choose where to focus my career long-term. It’s an exciting chance to be part of JD.com’s global journey and to help bring an Asian company to an even larger international market.

What kind of challenges does it hold for you?
There are many, but language is definitely one of them. Operating in a professional environment really challenges my Chinese skills, but I see this as an opportunity to grow. I believe stepping out of my comfort zone and improving my communication in both business and cultural contexts will not only help me integrate better into the company but also prepare me to take on greater international responsibilities in the future.

Did NIS help you prepare for your current position in any way?
For sure! Always stepping out of your comfort zone and never being satisfied with where you are — that mentality has truly shaped who I am today. Especially in such a large company with an extremely competitive environment, those skills are essential for growth and success. I really appreciate that NIS gave me the opportunity to develop this mindset at an early stage, giving me the resilience and confidence to face new challenges head-on.

What’s the one thing that you are really enjoying or most excited about these days?
One of the reasons I chose to come to China for a year from the Netherlands is that it allows me to spend more time with my family, especially my dad. Working here is not only helping me grow professionally but also giving me the chance to reconnect with my roots and discover more about who I am as a person. I know this journey of self-discovery will never truly end, but I enjoy uncovering new parts of myself every day. Most importantly, I get to see my dad and spend meaningful time with my Chinese family every weekend. For me, this means more than anything, and I truly appreciate the opportunity I’ve been given.

What’s the one thing you miss most about Japan/Nagoya/NIS?
I miss my family, my friends, and the mentors who shaped who I am today, as well as the people who continue to help me grow into a better person every day. No matter where I am, Nagoya will always be my home and my safe place. I truly can’t wait to return this January for the New Year, reconnect with people I haven’t seen in so long, and catch up on their lives. I’m really excited to hear their updates and stories — I know they’ll be amazing and special!

Lastly, what words of wisdom do you have for today’s Dolphins?
Never let anything limit what you can do or hold back your potential. Only you truly know what you are capable of. At the same time, always appreciate the people around you — they are the ones who will support you when it matters most. Remember to give back to your community, your family, and your friends. Learn to accept help when you need it, and be ready to help others when you can. Asking for help is not something to be embarrassed about — it’s actually a strength and a skill. It took me a long time to realize that, so I hope you will always seek help when needed and extend a hand to those in need.

私は現在、中国最大手の小売企業であり、世界の「Fortune Global 500」で44位にランクインしているJD.com（京東商城）で研修を受けています。1998年創業のJD.comは、Eコマース、物流、産業サービス、ヘルスケア、テクノロジー分野で世界をリードしている企業で、2024年には売上高1,500億ドルを超える規模に成長しました。私はこの会社のリーダーシッププログラムに参加し、将来の中核人材となることを目指しています。リテール、物流、R&D、テクノロジーなど幅広い分野で研修を受け、世界的に影響力を持つ企業の一員として成長していけることを誇りに思っています。

お仕事の中で最もやりがいを感じるのはどんなときですか？
私はまず北京で1年間を過ごし、その後ヨーロッパに移って、JD.comのEUでの事業拡大をサポートする予定です。すでにイギリスやオランダ、ドイツ、フランス、スペイン、ポーランドに物流拠点や倉庫があり、これが成長の大きな基盤となっています。

マネジメント研修プログラムでは、最初の6か月間、部門を横断してさまざまな経験を積みます。食品・飲料やラグジュアリーブランドなどのリテール部門からスタートし、その後は国際取引や物流の分野へ進む予定です。こうしたローテーションを通じて幅広い分野を学び、将来どこに自分のキャリアを重点的に築いていくかを見極められることを楽しみにしています。JD.comのグローバルな挑戦に参加し、アジア発の企業がさらに大きな国際市場へ羽ばたいていく過程に携われることに、大きなやりがいを感じています。

どんなチャレンジがありますか？
一番は言語ですね。プロフェッショナルな環境で中国語を使うのは大きな挑戦ですが、自分の成長のチャンスでもあると思っています。ビジネスや文化の文脈でのコミュニケーション力を高めることは、会社への理解を深めるだけでなく、将来より大きな国際的な役割を担うための準備にもなると思っています。

NISでの経験が、今の仕事に役立っていると感じますか？
間違いなく役立っています！「コンフォートゾーンから一歩踏み出す」「現状に満足しない」その姿勢は今の私を形作ったものです。競争の激しい大企業で成長し続けるためには、この力が欠かせません。NISで若いうちにその考え方を身につけられたことに心から感謝しています。

最近、楽しみにしていることやワクワクしていることはありますか？
オランダから中国に来た理由のひとつは、家族、特に父ともっと一緒に過ごすためです。ここで働くことでキャリアを積むだけでなく、自分のルーツに触れ、自分自身をより深く知る機会を得ています。毎週末、父や中国の家族と過ごす時間は、私にとって何よりも大切でかけがえのないものです。

NISで一番恋しいものは何ですか？
家族や友人、そして私を形作ってくれた恩師の方々、さらに今も私を成長へと導いてくれる人たちです。どこにいても、名古屋は私にとって変わらぬ「ホーム」であり、心安らぐ場所です。新年を迎える1月に名古屋へ戻り、久しぶりに大切な人たちと再会し、互いの近況を語り合えることを心から楽しみにしています。きっと特別で素晴らしい時間になると確信しています。

最後に、後輩たちへのメッセージをお願いします。

自分の可能性を狭めたり、力を発揮することをためらったりしないでください。自分の力を一番よくわかっているのは、他でもない自分自身です。 同時に、周りの人への感謝も忘れずに。大切なときに支えてくれるのは、家族や友人、そしてコミュニティの人たちです。その気持ちは、少しずつでも周りの人に返せると素敵ですね。

助けが必要なときは素直に受け入れ、逆に自分にできることがあれば手を差し伸べてみましょう。助けを求めることは決して恥ずかしいことではなく、むしろ大切な力やスキルのひとつです。私もそれに気づくまで時間がかかりました。だからこそ、あなたには必要なときには迷わず助けを求め、同時に困っている人には力を貸せるようであってほしいと思います。
