Excited to Start Medical School

Altamash, Class of 2017, is busy working and studying in Australia. He’s heading to medical school with dreams of becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Where are you living now?
I’m currently located in Melbourne, Australia.

What are you doing these days?
I completed a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne, majoring in Human Physiology. Currently, I am an Honours student at Swinburne University doing research in Muscle Exercise Physiology and the Immune System.

What kind of challenges does it hold for you?
I did not choose Biology as a subject when I was doing IB at NIS – it was definitely a challenge when I decided to pursue a Biology major. Fortunately, not knowing anything about a subject wasn’t new for me.
Did NIS help you prepare for your current situation in any way?
When I joined NIS in grade 10 S2, I knew very little about the subjects I was studying. I feel like my homeschool experience gave me the skill to understand, and NIS gave me confidence in my ability to understand new concepts.
What’s the one thing that you are really enjoying or most excited about these days?
These days, I’m excited to start medical school. I am pleased to say I successfully secured a Doctor of Medicine (MD) spot at the University of Queensland, January 2023 intake. Still too early to tell, but the game plan is to become an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Are you working also?
For the time being, I’m working for Coinpresso, a Marketing Agency based in NZ as a Social Media Manager. It's a temporary job to build connections and pay the bills. It's going well so far. I made some solid connections with a few big clients, the likes of Firstrade and Bitcoin Magazine, to name a few.

What’s the one thing you miss most about NIS?
I miss the small class sizes and the close relationship I had with my teachers. In my opinion, the student-to-staff ratio is excellent and encourages all students to get involved.

I always felt that all my teachers were passionate. They made sure we understood the concepts and took their time to answer our questions properly. Shout out to Mr.Ryan, the Australian Chemistry teacher; and Mr.Todd, the Language and Literature teacher. They excelled in their roles and created the best learning environment.

Lastly, what words of wisdom do you have for today’s Dolphins?
For today’s Dolphins, I would say only compare yourself to who you were yesterday, never someone else. Keep your head down, and never lose focus on what’s important to you.

Thank you for reading through my little life update!
