Sarah (Class of 1998) is far from Nagoya, but the lessons and leadership experiences she gained at NIS continue to guide her. Here shares where she is now, what inspires her, and what she hopes today’s Dolphins will carry with them.

Where are you living now?
Mitchell, South Dakota

What kind of work are you doing?
Academic Administrator at Mitchell Christian School

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Working with students of all ages as we house students from age 3 through their senior year in high school. Diversity—as I wear many hats and I am always kept on my toes!

What kind of challenges does it hold for you?
Due to all of the hats I wear, I have to juggle a lot of different tasks, while balancing my home and work life.

Did NIS help you prepare for your current position in any way?
Absolutely. I was class president and student council president in high school. I was captain of the basketball team and an assistant volleyball coach. I was also a student rep on the WASC accreditation team one year. NIS gave me many leadership opportunities.

What’s the one thing that you are really enjoying or most excited about these days?
Making memories with my family, whether here at home, or when we travel on vacation. I've been married to my husband, Craig, for 23 years, and we have four sons. Aiden is a sophomore in college at Mount Marty University in Yankton, SD. Denairic is in 9th grade, Cavvan is in 4th grade, and Brydd is in 1st grade.

What’s the one thing you miss most about Japan and NIS?
The Japanese culture and the close-knit family atmosphere of the school as a whole.

Lastly, what words of wisdom do you have for today’s Dolphins?
Push yourself, and allow yourself to be pushed. Step outside of your comfort zone and embrace new experiences. Make sure you always feel challenged. Serve others. Always be kind.

アメリカ・サウスダコタ州ミッチェルに住んでいます。

お仕事の内容を教えてください。
ミッチェル・クリスチャン・スクールでアカデミック・アドミニストレーター（学務管理者）として働いています。

お仕事の中で、いちばん楽しいと感じることは？
3歳から高校最終学年まで、幅広い年齢の子どもたちと関われることです。また、一人でさまざまな役割を担うため毎日が新鮮で、常に気が引き締まっています。そんな“多様性”も、この仕事の魅力ですね。

反対に、チャレンジだと感じることは？
多くの役割を同時にこなす必要があるため、たくさんの業務を整理しながら、家庭と仕事のバランスを取ることです。

NISでの経験は、今の仕事に役立っていますか？
もちろんです。高校時代にはクラスプレジデントや生徒会長を務め、バスケットボール部のキャプテン、バレーボール部のアシスタントコーチも経験しました。また、WASC認証チームの生徒代表として参加したこともあります。NISは、数えきれないほどのリーダーシップの機会を与えてくれました。

最近楽しみにしていることや興味のあることは何ですか？
家族との時間を大切にし、思い出を重ねていくことです。自宅で過ごす何気ない時間も、旅行先でのひとときも、どちらも宝物です。夫のクレイグとは結婚23年目。4人の息子がいます。長男のエイデンはサウスダコタ州ヤンクトンにあるマウント・マーティー大学に通う大学2年生。 次男デネイリックは9年生、三男キャヴァンは4年生、末っ子のブリッドは1年生です。

NIS、日本で一番懐かしく思うことは？
日本の文化、そして学校全体に流れていた、家族のように温かく結びついた雰囲気です。

最後に、後輩へのアドバイスをお願いします。
自分を成長させるために、一歩踏み出してください。そして、周りから背中を押されることも受け入れてください。コンフォートゾーンから外へ出て、新しい経験を楽しんでください。常に挑戦し続けることを忘れず、誰かのために行動し、思いやりを持って常に行動してください。
