The Memory

Day One

I’m honored to have been one of the original 84. My sisters, Sarah and Lois, and I are in that commemorative photo from 1964. That was quite a day. I remember standing in front of the school, with ants crawling up my legs, listening to the US ambassador to Japan, Edwin Reischauer, speak. In my memory the speech and the opening ceremony seemed to last forever. We had been told to give full attention to the speakers so I didn’t think I could swipe at the ants. I tried my best to knock them off by shuffling and stomping my feet while appearing to stay focused on the speaker.
