Applying to NIS

Before submitting an application, we encourage families to become familiar with our admissions policies and criteria. These documents explain who we serve, how admissions decisions are made, and the expectations that guide learning and community life at NIS.

Understanding these policies before applying helps ensure a shared understanding between your family and the school.

Applications are submitted through the NIS Admissions Portal. After creating a family account, you'll be able to request information, schedule a campus tour, complete your application, upload documents, and communicate directly with our Admissions team throughout the process.

There are two application forms: one for ELC Preschool & Kindergarten and one for Grades 1-12. You will be asked to select your application to begin. We encourage families to complete the application thoughtfully and provide as much information as possible, as this helps us better understand each applicant.

Supporting documents help us develop a complete understanding of your child's educational background, learning needs, and readiness for NIS.

As part of the application, families will be asked to provide:

• Academic reports or transcripts from the past two years
• A confidential teacher recommendation
• Passport or Japanese residence documentation
• Student and parent photographs
• A family photograph
• A short video introduction
• Recommendation Forms:  
  • NIS ELC Early Childhood Recommendation Form for ELC Preschool & Kindergarten applicants
  • NIS Confidential Recommendation Form for applicants entering grades 1-12
• Any additional documents requested by the Admissions Office

A non-refundable application fee of ¥50,000 is required for each applicant.

Payment is made securely through the Admissions Portal by credit card and must be received before the admissions review process can begin.

Once all application materials have been received, our Admissions team begins a holistic review of each applicant.

Depending on the student's age, educational background, and previous schooling, this stage may include:

• An admissions interview with the student and parents
• Classroom observation (ELC applicants)
• English language assessment
• Placement or entrance testing, where appropriate

These conversations and assessments are not designed simply to evaluate applicants. They help us understand each student's strengths, learning profile, and support needs, enabling us to make informed admissions and placement decisions and ensure a successful transition to NIS.

Once the review process is complete, families will receive an admissions decision from the school.

Applicants who are offered a place will receive detailed enrollment information, including registration, orientation, and next steps before their child's first day at NIS.
