A Time of Growth, Challenge & Discovery

Middle School is a time of significant growth and challenge. Students begin to discover and develop greater independence while still requiring and benefiting from careful guidance and support. When students in Middle School engage in a broad range of subjects and experiences, they have more opportunities to discover and explore interests.

At NIS, we design these years so that students are challenged to think more deeply, take greater ownership of their learning, and engage with increasingly complex ideas. At the same time, we recognize the importance of maintaining a supportive environment where students feel known, valued, and connected to their community.

Guided by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), students develop essential knowledge and skills across subject areas and, through structured, inquiry-based engagements, build the ability to think critically and independently to form conceptual understandings at a deeper level. Then, through contextual tasks and assessments, transfer and apply their understanding into new contexts.

This balance of academic challenge and personal support ensures that students are well prepared for the transition to high school, with the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to succeed.

Our Middle School Curriculum

The Middle School curriculum at NIS is guided by the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) framework, and is designed to be engaging, relevant, and academically challenging.

The curriculum is built around the key elements of learning: knowledge, skills, conceptual understandings, and dispositions. Students develop both strong academic foundations and the ability to think critically and collaboratively, communicate effectively, care for each other and take responsibility for their learning.

Inquiry is central to the learning process. Students engage in guided inquiry-based tasks that start with what they already know and are set in real-life contexts and situations. From here, students use their knowledge and skills to explore ideas in depth, both independently and in collaborative teams, to organize thoughts and make connections both within and between subjects.

This approach supports the development of increasingly confident, independent, and reflective learners who are prepared for the academic demands of high school and who are able to actively contribute thoughtfully and meaningfully to the world around them.

Retreats & Learning Trips

Learning extends well beyond the classroom through retreats and learning trips that connect students with each other, their communities, and the world around them. These experiences build relationships and resilience while giving students meaningful opportunities to apply their learning in authentic, real-world contexts.

The Design Lab

The Design Lab is a space where ideas become solutions through creativity, experimentation, and hands-on learning. Students use the design process and tools such as coding, computer-aided design, 3D printing and laser cutting to prototype, test, refine, and bring their thinking to life.

Inquiry in Action

Inquiry puts students at the center of their learning—asking questions, making connections, and pursuing deeper understanding rather than simply learning facts. Across subjects, students apply their knowledge and skills to new situations, developing the confidence and curiosity to make an impact on the world around them.

Homeroom Communities

The middle school years bring significant academic, social, and personal growth. As students begin learning with multiple teachers across a range of subjects, homeroom provides an important sense of connection, consistency, and belonging.

Homeroom teachers serve as trusted adults who know students well, monitor their well-being, and help them navigate the opportunities and challenges of middle school. Through these relationships, students develop the confidence and support they need to engage fully in school life.

Homeroom also plays an important role in students' personal development. It provides dedicated time for well-being learning, community building, reflection, and the development of organizational and study skills. Together, these experiences help students strengthen relationships, build independence, and develop the skills needed to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
