Music and Social Justice

The Gr. 10 Music students performed under the “surfboard” of the Wing building during lunch today. It was a pop-up performance created to unveil what they worked on in their first unit around music and social justice. Essentially the unit was about protest, where they studied a bit about song types, how they are used, and why they are so effective. The students then chose one of their own to perform. One group performed “American Idiot,” which targets mass media and overpopulated news circuits. Another group chose the song “Preach,” which is about human rights, and more specifically, the black rights movement that gained momentum over the last year and continues to grow. With plans for more performing opportunities, we are looking forward to enjoying how the Gr. 10 students interpret their learning through music!
