First-Ever NISMUN!

On Monday, June 14th, with the enthusiasm of the High School Model United Nations Club members a new milestone in the club's history was achieved. Until now, student delegates have attended MUN conferences held off-campus and virtually. Feeling that the club wanted to raise its level with a worthy challenge, students elected to hold an all-day, in-house conference, called NISMUN '21.

Model United Nations is a club in which students play the role of a country and debate issues of real-world significance. Following a period of research on a topic from their country's perspective, students caucus in order to draft a UN resolution. For this conference, students debated on the topic of 'Planning for a Post-Pandemic World'. Two draft resolutions were debated, with one of the two resolutions passing in the General Assembly. Amoung the debates were how to help LEDCs recover economically, dealing with vaccine nationalism, and measures to prepare for future pandemics. Throughout the day, students gained experience in diplomacy, problem solving, negotiation, debate, and perspective-taking.

Ms. Hayashida and Mr. Gildart appreciate the effort and initiative of all student delegates, who worked all year long and over weekends to prepare for the conference, making this inaugural event a success. The club would like to particularly thank the maintenance team for their support in preparing the Kawanabe Room.

Building on this success, the club has plans for conferences in December and June of the 2021-2022 academic year!
