Gr.5 Build Their Own Nations

Gr. 5 students have been busy building their own countries! In their "How We Organize Ourselves" Unit of Inquiry, the Gr. 5s are exploring how nations interact with each other in order to meet the needs of their citizens. First, they focused on the things that help identify a nation (values, flag, motto, etc.). Next, they focused on how their country should be run (laws, services, etc.). This week, they are focused on how to interact with other countries to meet the economic needs of their citizens (trade). Each country selected a country profile which determines its size and biome. They also selected a natural resource profile to help identify their main resources to start the interaction process. Each country sent members to a variety of U.N. meetings - trade, general assembly, and security council. At these meetings, real-world scenarios were given to guide their interactions. Each country responded according to their values, size, needs and resources and after each round of scenarios, country teams reflected on their decision making and choices.
