Int'l Mother Language Day

Through a series of activities developed by students in Secondary homerooms, and a rotation of language games facilitated by our six Home Language Clubs, on Wednesday all of NIS celebrated UN Mother Language Day. Events were notable for the high level of initiative, commitment and collaboration shown by students. The high school Home Language Club leaders used songs, games, and fun phrases to reveal the diversity that we share at NIS. All Primary students were provided with a 'Language Passport' that was stamped as they travelled between language groups. Likewise in secondary homerooms students worked in groups to uncover and then share elements of their home cultures. Talk about proverbs, tongue twisters, Google mistranslations, popular music, untranslatable words, speaking volume and how we use space and touch to communicate in different cultures improved what the IB calls international-mindedness, our ability to perceive and operate in cross-cultural contexts. UN Mother Language Day helped us understand ourselves and how to connect with others better.
