A Legacy Spanning 60+ Years
Nagoya International School was founded on a simple but powerful idea: that Nagoya needed a place where children could learn, grow, and connect through an international education.
Since opening our doors in 1964, NIS has grown into one of the region’s most established international schools, shaped by a community committed to providing an education that evolves with the world around it. What began with a small group of students representing a handful of nationalities has become a diverse and globally connected community, grounded in shared values and a clear sense of purpose.
Over the decades, we have continually strengthened our academic program, our campus, and our community. From the development of our distinctive campus to the adoption of the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, each step has reflected a commitment to delivering a rigorous, relevant, and forward-looking education. Today, NIS students graduate prepared for universities around the world and join a global network of alumni making meaningful contributions across fields and countries.
This history is not defined by a single moment, but by a steady progression of growth, reflection, and renewal. It is a story shaped by the people who have been part of NIS, and one that continues to evolve with each new generation of students.

Dreams of a School Come True
Founded by enthusiastic and supportive members of the community in the early 1960s, NIS has developed alongside the changing needs of our students in our little corner of the outskirts of Nagoya for over 60 years. What we have changed to become from then, and where we will surely grow from now, mirrors the region's economic growth and the changing makeup of the international population in Nagoya we serve. What has remained constant, however, is the community's belief in the importance of doing whatever is needed to ensure that we can deliver on the school's mission to each student who calls NIS home.
