Helping Protect Oriental White Stork Habitat
Fifteen members of the NIS Global Issues Network (GIN) student-led club again travelled to Toyooka in northern Hyogo Prefecture. For several years now, NIS GIN has been selling organic rice grown in Toyooka and taken trips to work in wetlands there to help create suitable habitats for the Oriental White Stork. After becoming extinct in Japan, with the benefit of six birds donated from Siberia and a captive breeding program, the Oriental White Stork now numbers over 100 in the wild in Japan. NIS GIN members are looking forward to further deepening their relationship with the Toyooka community again next year.
